Germany claims victory with remaining Allied troops surrendering, but the evacuation serves to boost British morale, still referred to as the "Dunkirk spirit." But with Adolf Hitler halting Germany's advance there, the Allies are able to perform a daring-and successful-evacuation, called Operation Dynamo. Over five years, thousands of ships engage in 100-plus battles in the Atlantic Ocean with approximately 100,000 lives lost. The Axis, with its U-boats, responds with a counter-blockade that is at first successful, but the Allies' use of convoys, aircraft and technology eventually turns the tide. Costumes and props for filming were donated by museums free-of-charge. Thanks to donations from thousands of people, a film was launched about the heroism of soldiers from Panfilov’s division, which took part in heavy fighting near Moscow in the fall of 1941. Ordinary viewers, having grown tired of this trend, decided to make their own movie. All those things, of course, did exist, but in Russian cinema they are often taken to the extreme. Most present-day Russian directors prefer not to portray heroic battles, but to highlight the ugly sides of that war: desertion, vicious political officers, penal battalions, alcoholism among soldiers, barrier troops, betrayal, and etc. With the collapse of the USSR, large-scale films about World War II became a thing of the past. ![]()
